Orthopaedic surgeon and advanced sports medicine specialist with team physician experience in professional sports opens new office in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – February 15, 2016 – Tenet Florida Physician Services (TFPS) is pleased to announce George L. Caldwell Jr., MD, an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopy procedures for the shoulder, knee and elbow, and advanced sports medicine, opens a new office at the Florida Institute of Orthopaedic Surgical Specialists (FIOSS) in Fort Lauderdale. Dr. Caldwell is on staff at Florida Medical Center, a campus of North Shore in Fort Lauderdale and other local area hospitals.

For shoulder arthroscopy, Dr. Caldwell’s areas of interest include labrum repair, stabilization, rotator cuff repair, advanced reconstruction and AC joint reconstruction. Dr. Caldwell also performs knee arthroscopy including meniscus repair and surgery, cartilage restoration and ACL reconstruction. For elbow arthroscopy, Dr. Caldwell performs advanced techniques in ligament reconstruction and bicep tendon repair. His surgical specialties include arthroscopic surgery, joint reconstruction, which is a minimally invasive approach to joint surgery.

Since 1994, Dr. Caldwell has worked as an orthopaedic surgeon at four major healthcare groups and prior to joining TFPS, he was the co-director of sports medicine at a large physician group in Fort Lauderdale. Dr. Caldwell’s experience as a team physician includes working with the Miami Dolphins (NFL) as head team physician 1996 – 2014, as a team physician with the Florida Marlins and now Miami Marlins (MLB) since 1996, consulting team physician for the Baltimore Orioles (MLB) baseball team in 1996, and from 1999-2009, team physician for the Miami Fusion (MLS) soccer team in 1999 and working for Team U.S.A. Olympic Soccer as consulting team physician (for the South Florida venue in 1996). He has also worked as a team physician for the Florida Panthers (NHL) franchise. Dr. Caldwell’s experience in helping high school and youth sports athletes includes as team physician for Pine Crest School, Westminster Academy, Boyd Anderson High School, Dillard High School, and Stranahan High School since 2004 and he was also the orthopaedic surgeon on the field at the NFL Global Football – Youth Game in 1999. He is a member of the executive committee for the NFL Team Physicians Society.

Dr. Caldwell is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and in Sports Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Caldwell completed a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthopaedics and an international shoulder and trauma fellowship at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Kantonsspital Friborg located in Friborg, Switzerland. Dr. Caldwell finished his residency in orthopaedic surgery at The Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell University Medical School in New York, NY, which is considered one of the foremost centers in the U.S. and his internship at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Dr. Caldwell graduated medical school from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton University in Princeton, NJ.

Dr. Caldwell is an award-winning physician having been named to the Castle Connolly America’s Top Doctors List for over 15 years in a row. He has also been named as one of the Leading Physicians of the World by The International Association of Healthcare Professional in 2010 and as one of America’s Top Orthopedists by Consumers’ Research Council of America in 2010. Dr. Caldwell has published numerous scientific publications relating to orthopaedic surgery and advanced sports medicine in peer reviewed journals and medical books. He has written numerous abstracts on the shoulder, knee and elbow arthroscopic surgery and participated as an invited lecturer in dozens of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine conferences, meetings and symposiums. Dr. Caldwell has been practicing medicine since 1988.
